Stars On The Red Carpet During The Digital 1990s
What movie fan doesn’t know about the “red carpet?” Its where the stars come out to shine the brightest. Every decade has seen its share of stars and the 90s was no exception. In fact the 90s saw the usual new faces, but also some major changes in Hollywood. It was the first decade of the “new media.”
The digital age brought the internet and all that comes with it to Hollywood. Movies were now available on the web along with a ton of movie star information. The Internet Movie Data Base has myriad facts on just about every actor who has ever played a role on TV or film; all with the click of a mouse.
The 90s also saw the digital age take over the way photographers take still pictures. The thousands upon thousands of still photos taken at each red carpet event are now mostly done digitally. Film cameras are quickly going the way of the eight track tape clearing the way for the super speed of the digital revolution.
For photographers taking pictures of stars on the red carpet it means; shoot first (and often) and sort it out later. The new fast and dirty style of taking movie star photos is due in part to the increased popularity of paparazzi style photography. But the red carpet offers so much more than this style of photography can capture.
During the 90s, before the complete takeover by digital photography, there were still some artists in the crowd. For these photographers the stars on the red carpet were a most worthy quarry. One which demanded an artistic eye and the patience of a hunter. The rewards for these special few photographers were worth the time it took to get the photo.
During those brief moments the stars on the red carpet moved through their sights, the true photographers captured more than a snapshot of the star. They photographed a piece of the true personality, the kind of photo that shows some insight into what makes this person the star they are.
Many of the 90s films broke ground, changed lives and are surely destined to become classics. Films like; Unforgiven, The Usual Suspects, MIsery, Forest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Fargo, Saving Private Ryan, The Matrix, American Beauty and As Good As It Gets all proved themselves worthy of praise from audiences of all kinds. The great movies of the 90s often showed us a side of life that made us stand back in awe. They demanded our attention the same way an insightful portrait of a star does.
The 90s may be gone, but movies keep rolling and the stars on the red carpet keep walking. With a little luck and a good eye behind the camera, we as movie fans will always have still photos that capture those special moments in time. The still photos, like the films are a glimpse into the style and fashion of each decade. The best of both help us to connect a little more with the magic that is Hollywood.
